“You made something out of nothing because you had the will to do it, that was the wonder.” ~ Edith Schloss / The Loft Generation
About
Aremy Stewart (b. Minnesota, 1982) synthesizes personal narrative, mythology, human potential, mindset and philosophy into paintings that merge abstraction and figuration. Using acrylics & gouache on canvas and wood, Stewart builds little worlds of layered color.
“My paintings are successful when they feel “true”, not overworked or mannered. Sprezzatura, the Italian word for making something difficult seem easy or casual, has become central to my practice. My work is about this tension between effort and the effortless.”
Aremy’s practice is guided by studies in human psychology and brain science, the parameters of the physical body and the rhythms of nature. Art is a spiritual act for Stewart, accessed through the flow state brought on by the deep focus of creating work. By ceding control to the process, she creates without a premeditated goal, tapping into intuition and muscle memory. Her paintings are informed by the work of Helen Frankenthaler, Hilma af Klint, Rothko, & art movements like CoBrA. Aremy works in Portland, OR where she lives with her family and paints every day.
